![]() Univision has been struggling as of late, per media reports. Compete was founded under this subsidiary as a joint venture between the gaming-focused Kotaku and sports-related Deadspin. Univision rebranded the group as Gizmodo Media Group, and set the company’s various media subsidiaries (Kotaku, Deadspon, Jalopnik, Jezebel, just to name a few) loose. Kotaku initially saw life under the Gawker banner back in 2004, but was sold along with the rest of Gawker Media Group following a $140M invasion of privacy lawsuit by former wrestler Hulk Hogan. I’m so proud of what and did with the site and gutted that due to Univision cuts we’re ending the project Last year, we tried something different: Compete, an esports site melding the sensibilities of Kotaku and Deadspin. Compete, which began operation in March of last year, is apparently the victim of budget cuts coming down from the site’s owner Univision. Kotaku’s esports vertical, Compete, is shutting down, with two of the vertical’s three editors departing the company. Esports media sites, especially independent ones, have seen instability as of late, but this closure appears more directly related to internal Univision issues.All three media sites are a part of the Gizmodo Media Group, owned by Univision following a lawsuit that led to the shut down of former parent site Gawker.Compete, an esports vertical created in partnership with Kotaku and Deadspin, is shutting down this week.
